Treating your lovely new leather bag as an investment, and not just an accessory (albeit a very nice one!).
Your leather bag may be an accessory, but it's not just any accessory, it's also an investment. Like all other investments it needs some care and attention from time to time to stay in good shape.
To give your leather bag some TLC we recommend you wipe down your bag with a damp cloth once a week and give your bag a decent clean and conditioning every 3-4 months.
When storing your bag (particularly handbags!) for a period of time it's always a good idea to stuff the bag with scrunched up newspaper and cover with a dust bag. Here at Made in Tuscany we like to add value to your purchase wherever we can so most of our bags come with a branded protective dust cover to keep dust and dirt off the leather further increasing the life of your bag.
Always store your bag away from direct sunlight and any areas with excessive changes of heat, such as near radiators. Never squeeze your bag into a small space, but allow a flow of dry air, leather can absorb moisture in high humidity which can allow mould to grow. Leather, being a natural product, contains moisture, and it's important that it does not dry out.
Cleaning your bag is simple, just a little effort can go a long way and your bag will reward you by looking great, for longer. It will also age beautifully.
Always use a specialist leather cleaner and not home remedies such as baby wipes or vinegar, as these have chemicals in them which can damage the leather by drying it out and ruining its colour. The same goes for excess water; leather and water don't mix particularly well, so wipe off any surface water as quickly as you can. Using a waterproof spray or cream can also keep your bag protected from any water damage from rainfall.
Use a lint roller or a vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment to remove any loose dust or dirt. This will make sure the bag is clean before conditioning.
The final rule is be gentle; if any stains won't come out after cleaning the bag thoroughly then you're best off consulting a professional. Even though we are unable to provide a cleaning service here, we can give you advice and tips. So please do get in touch if you need any help.
